I took another look at "1984" and confirmed that the novel itself uses the term 'doublethink." The next issue will contain a correction. It turns out that doublespeak was popularized in the 1950s after "1984" was published and is attributed to a combination of George Orwell's newspeak and doublethink. George Orwell never used the term in his novel "1984," but he did write political essays introducing the concepts behind doublespeak without giving it that name. For these reasons, many sources discuss it as "Orwellian doublespeak."

Thanks for your comment. I am in the process of obtaining another copy of "1984." The copy I read had a Forward and Afterward that I believe discussed doublespeak. You may be right that the novel itself used doublethink. I will confirm and let you know.
